Good candle care starts with the product’s own directions: trim the cooled wick, choose a suitable location, stay within its burn-session limit, and let the candle cool before moving it. A full melt pool is never a reason to exceed the stated burn time.
Before each burn
Check the container for cracks or damage. Trim the wick as directed and remove loose trimmings, matches, and other debris. Put the candle on a stable heat-safe surface with clear space around and above the flame.
During the burn
Follow the candle’s instructions. For our current mason-jar candles, trim the cooled wick to about 1/4 inch before lighting, keep the wax clear of debris, and use a stable heat-safe surface. Keep the flame away from drafts and anything that can burn. Never leave a candle unattended; extinguish it before leaving or sleeping. Do not burn longer than four hours at a time, and stop when about 1/2 inch of wax remains.
After the flame is out
Allow the candle to cool completely before handling or relighting it. Store it closed in a cool, dry place away from direct heat and sunlight. Do not use water to extinguish a candle or add anything to the wax.
When something seems wrong
If the flame is unusually high, the jar is damaged, or the candle behaves unexpectedly, extinguish it and contact the maker. Do not keep burning just to force wax at the edge to melt.
